Gemma Chan knows how to crush a look. In a recent Instagram post, the actress shared a stunning photo of herself from last year’s Cannes Film Festival in a sheer dress adorned with glistening silver and gold leaves and flowers. Posing on a balcony overlooking a cute street lined with palm trees and the ocean in the background, Chan completed the look with a tightly kept bun and stunning red lips. Gemma Chan captioned the photo “Last year,” and tagged the iconic French film festival for good measure.
Known for drawing the biggest upcoming features in the game, Cannes acts as a launching pad for well-known and lesser-known creatives to premiere their features for showbiz’s best and brightest, along with a slew of press. The event is a yearly “who’s who” in the entertainment industry with actors and actresses, such as Gemma Chan, dressing to the nines and showing off their top dollar looks. Through a wide array of categories, including one celebrating older films, attendees are able to take in the best the on-screen world has to offer.
As for Gemma Chan, her time at last year’s Cannes Film Festival was the actress’s first appearance at the celebrated gathering. Her dress was just as stunning the first time through as it was in her recent throwback post, gaining the attention of photographers and journalists who couldn’t wait to speak with the performer whose career has really blossomed over the last few years. Chan was in attendance to catch the premiere of Les Intranquilles (The Restless) on a beautiful day in mid-July.
Although she’s been a name in Hollywood over the past two decades, holding down one-off roles in television shows such as Doctor Who and Sherlock, as well as minor parts in films including Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it was her role in the sci-fi series Humans for which Gemma Chan really began to shine. From there, it was all up as she nabbed a leading role in the fan-favorite romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians. That same year, Chan would also hit big screens in the historical drama Mary Queen of Scots. Both roles led her to land the villainous part in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. Most recently, she’s been taking the Marvel Universe by storm having appeared in Captain Marvel as Minn-Erva before landing a more prominent and permanent part as Sersi in Eternals. Up next, Chan will be seen in a leading role in Olivia Wilde’s highly anticipated psychological thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, which is on target to hit screens on September 23.
While the inspiration and style behind a golden and silver leaf dress has certainly been done before, we think Gemma Chan absolutely rocks it. In the past, the look has seen versions worn by actresses including Brittany Snow, but Chan’s design from last year’s Cannes Film Festival is truly one of a kind. You can check out the gorgeous actress in all her silver and gold glory above and be sure to keep your eyes peeled to your favorite celeb’s Instagram accounts over the approaching days to catch more amazing looks from the legendary French festival.
