Elton John’s farewell tour has met yet another setback. The tour, “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” began in 2018 and was postponed for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic. And now, just when the five-time Grammy winner was ready to resume the tour this week, he tested positive for COVID-19.

The disappointing development has been shared by American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, where the 74-year-old musician was going to perform on the scheduled tour dates this week. In their statement, the venue has shared that Elton John’s tour dates set for January 25 and January 26, in Dallas, have been postponed as he has tested positive for COVID-19. They have reassured his fans that John is fully vaccinated, has received the booster shot, and is only experiencing mild symptoms.

The venue has also instructed fans who had purchased tickets to Elton John’s performances to keep their tickets as new tour dates will be released soon. “Elton and the ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour look forward to returning to the stage shortly,” the statement reads. The “Rocket Man” singer has also shared the news via his Instagram story and confirmed that his symptoms are mild. He added that he understands that the rescheduling of his Dallas shows is going to cause a “massive disappointment,” but it is necessary for his and his team’s safety.

Like American Airlines Center, Elton John has also confirmed that he plans to return to the stage soon and perform his Arkansas shows this coming weekend. As stated above, John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour has resumed after nearly two years since it was postponed in 2018 in wake of the pandemic. The tour was again delayed in 2021 after the singer got injured and had to undergo hip surgery. He shifted the remainder of his 2021 tour dates to 2023 as he was “in pain most of the time” and didn’t want to perform on the stage while unable to “give less than 110 percent.”

In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Elton John had shared that he is done with stage performances as he has been touring since he was just 17. While he feels lucky to have the opportunity to have led this “incredible life” and has enjoyed every aspect of it, he has had “enough of applause.” But even though he wants to spend time with his family– his husband David Furnish and their two sons: Elijah, 9, and Zachary, 11– he wants to finish his last tour in the “most triumphant way possible.”

While Elton John had been unable to complete his retirement tour, he has been pretty busy being the legendary musician he is. During the first COVID-19 lockdown, he made the album The Lockdown Sessions in collaboration with artists like Dua Lipa, Eddie Vedder, Miley Cyrus, Stevie Wonder, Rina Sawayama, Lil Nas X, Nicki Minaj, Young Thug, and Stevie Nicks. He released the album last year, followed by his “Merry Christmas”, his festive duet with Ed Sheeran, which topped the UK Singles Chart in December 2021. As for his last stage performance, he will be bidding farewell to his touring days in Sweden on July 8, 2023.
