Elon Musk shocked the world when it was announced that Twitter agreed to a massive sell to the billionaire. Musk would effectively be taking over the biggest social media platform globally, and he paid a hefty price for it. Twitter and the world’s richest man agreed to a $44 billion price point. Once the sale announcement made headlines, a host of people began to abandon the platform entirely. Once news gets out of Musk’s first move, even more people will surely delete their accounts. The man wants to bring back Twitter’s most hated figure, Donald Trump.

The former president of the United States was banned from Twitter back in January of 2021 after he was accused of inciting the riot that involved droves of people bombarding the Capitol. The entire incident left the country reeling. Now Elon Musk has publicly stated that he would allow Trump to return to Twitter, and he would all but get rid of permanent bans. According to Musk, “Banning Trump from Twitter didn’t end Trump’s voice. It will amplify it among the right. And this is why it was morally wrong and flat-out stupid.” Musk is right about one thing, banning Trump certainly did not silence his voice in any manner. The former president has also stated that he would not be returning to the platform ever and has since started his own social media platform called “Truth Social.”

Elon Musk wanting to get rid of permanent bans on Twitter is certainly nothing new, as the man had stated in a TED Talk back in April that he wanted the social media platform to behave like a “de facto town square.” He added that Twitter should be a place where people “speak freely within the bounds of the law.” Nothing against Musk, but apparently, he has not spent much time on Twitter if he aims to allow any of this to happen or thinks this will happen. There are far too many vile people on the internet that hide behind a profile so that they can say some outlandish things. Hate speech is a dangerous thing, and though some might claim it to be part of free speech, it can be damaging for so many reasons.

Elon Musk has agreed to buy Twitter for $44 billion, but the deal is not done as of right now. There must be a shareholder vote for the deal to truly go through. As of right now, it is but a verbal agreement. Once regulatory agencies and shareholders hold the vote to allow Musk to take over, then the deal is completely done. Both parties can also back out and pay the opposing party $1 billion. It will take another two or three months for the deal to truly get done, and anything can happen in between those times.

Elon Musk is currently worth over $230 billion, according to Forbes, so buying Twitter for $44 billion seems like a drop in the bucket for the man’s wealth. Besides going away with permanent bans, the man might pull more drastic moves that could theoretically change how the social media platform behaves. Time will tell, and everyone will certainly have to wait until the end of summer to see this deal go through.
