Sam Ashgari, the husband of pop star Britney Spears, has stepped up to support his wife’s provocative posts on Instagram. E! News Online reported on Ashgari coming to Spears’ defense on the social media platform. After Spears’ latest set of nude posts, which have since been deleted, Ashgari claimed in an Instagram story that his wife has been unfairly criticized for her content. According to Ashgari, “I personally preferred she never posted these but who am I to control someone that’s been under a microscope and been controlled for most of her life.”

Sam Ashgari noted that Britney Spears has not posted uncensored nude photos, with the exception of her bare posterior. He compared the level of nudity in Spears’ posts to what one might encounter in an advertisement for lotion or soap. Ashgari made the point that the aspersions his wife endures are disproportionate to her actions, as she is merely participating in the same trends as thousands of others on the internet.

Ashgari admitted that he does not enjoy that his wife posts lewd photos but believes that he has no right to control her, nor does anyone else. He has previously defended Britney Spears after critical comments from Kevin Federline, Spears’ former husband, regarding her sharing of her body. As far as Ashgari is concerned, someone who has endured the kind of restriction of freedom that Britney Spears has deserves to express themselves as much or more than anyone.

Britney Spears’ inhibited freedom came in the form of a 13-year conservatorship, during which her father, Jamie Spears, exercised far-reaching control over the star’s life. That included financial control, allowing Jamie and his family to profit off of Britney Spears’ stardom, while Britney herself remained on a short leash held by her father. In November of 2021, Britney Spears was released from the conservatorship, finally free to express herself without her father’s filter.

Part of that expression has been a series of mostly nude photos on Instagram. For Spears, the photos are symbolic; she is exercising her sense of autonomy and possession of her own body. Britney Spears also sees the posts as an effort to break down the stigma surrounding female nudity, ultimately making the photos out to be paragons of empowerment.

Sam Ashgari isn’t the only member of Britney Spears’ family who isn’t thrilled about her racy posts. Her son Jayden, whom she shares with Federline, expressed his discomfort with his mother’s nude photos and hopes it is something she grows out of. At only 16, even Jayden understands his mother’s troubled past under the conservatorship and doesn’t intend to let his mother’s disagreeable decisions keep him from loving her.

The legal dispute between Britney Spears and her family continues, but she has officially been free of the conservatorship for over a year. Fans and internet trolls alike have made their opinions on Spears’ Instagram activity known, with some aligning with her feminist perspective, others railing against it, and others dismissing the posts as cheap ploys for attention. Britney Spears has been one of the most pervasive celebrities in the world for over two decades, and her story has no shortage of drama; though she has found freedom from her conservatorship, it remains to be seen if she will ever be free of the tabloid criticism and exploitation that, thanks to social media, has more voices than ever.
