Billie Eilish is never one to mince words. The 19 year old Grammy winner seems to have no shortage of exposure, for better or for worse. Recently she teamed up with Weird Al for a live performance of The Nightmare Before Christmas. But like any young pop star, she continues to get attention for any comments that she makes. Most recently, Eilish has come against porn and has a lot to say about it.

According to Billie Eilish, she has a good reason to rail against the porn industry. In a recent interview on the controversial program The Howard Stern Show, Eilish was very free with her opinions on the effect that porn can have on a young mind. The singer became candid as she stated she was watching porn as young as 11 years old (per Cinema Blend). She went on to explain how damaging it was to watch the kind of content she was watching at that age. “It led to problems where, you know, the first few times I had sex, I was not saying no to things that were not good, and it’s because I thought that that’s what I was supposed to be attracted to,” Eilish stated. This was only among some of the grievances she had with the experiences. She also detailed that watching BDSM gave her nightmares.

Billie Eilish is not alone in her criticisms of the porn industry. Recently pornography has come under fire for some of its practices. The popular site PornHub is one of the streaming sites that allows a lot of leeway. Many accounts on the site were unverified, allowing illegal videos to be uploaded. PornHub enacted an overhaul of their verification process to ensure it was more difficult to upload certain videos (per Cinema Blend). One of the main issues was the ease in which child abuse was accessible. Objectification and access to abuse videos have long been prevalent in the industry because of this lapse in security. Though this is a positive first step, this of course is not a fool proof plan to fix these issues.

It is hard enough without unrealistic expectations being posed on women. Billie Eilish has been vocal about how the entertainment industry has affected her. The singer used to be known for her baggy clothes aesthetic. Eilish commented that while it was easier to move around on stage, it affected her psyche and how she looked at herself. In an interview with The Guardian, she spoke on how difficult it is to navigate the world this way. She was often forced with double standards for her her oversized t-shirts and commenting when she would wear a tank top and shorts.

Billie Eilish is under constant scrutiny, despite the fact that she is still technically a teenager. It would be difficult for anyone to overcome self-doubt in these circumstances. In light of these major concerns, Eilish seems to be doing pretty well. Although she admitted to being overcome with nervousness for her appearance on Saturday Night Live this month, reviews were mostly positive (via Insider). Fans can also catch her documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry on Apple TV (per Apple).
