Anne Hathaway was honored at the recent ELLE’s 29th annual Women in Hollywood event on Tuesday, October 18th. The Academy Award winner wore a gorgeous black dress at the Gala and celebrated being honored via Instagram by thanking everyone who supported her. She also gave a special shoutout to Sigourney Weaver and Mindy Kaling.

During her acceptance speech, Anne Hathaway had an important message regarding high-achieving women in Hollywood. The 39-year-old actress asked everyone to “be happy for women” and specifically for those who have accomplished quite a lot in the industry. The Les Miserables star has experienced quite a bit of backlash online over the years and appeared to have responded to all of the hate.

After her 2013 Oscar win, Anne Hathaway was the subject of much discourse online. The hashtag #HathaHate became something that was spread around on social media. Hathaway made reference to the hate she received in her acceptance speech.

Anne Hathaway told anyone who expressed hatred towards her that they “do not have the right to judge-and especially not hate-someone for existing.” She noted the toxicity which permeates much of the discourse and thought on social media and described it as “misplaced hate.” Despite the hate she’s received, Hathaway still hoped those who did express their hatred towards her get “the chance to relearn love.”

Anne Hathaway also brought up her experience during a 2014 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, recalling when she came across an article titled “Why Does Everybody Hate Anne Hathaway?” In her interview on Ellen, Hathaway explained why it was difficult for her to ignore the article and admitted that she “hadn’t learned to love [herself[ yet.”

In Anne Hathaway’s opinion, if you don’t come to love yourself, then you’ll bound to agree with the hateful words of others. The actress said she didn’t want to agree with the hate some people had for her, so she took some time to “figure out who [she was]” and went on a journey of discovering self-love. While Hathaway admits that she doesn’t feel it every second and every day, she does have a “tremendous amount of love and compassion for everyone” and, most importantly, for herself.

Actresses like Anne Hathaway have to endure so much that it sometimes can become challenging to remain in the public eye. For instance, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence once admitted that she took some time away from Hollywood because many fans believed her performances weren’t of the same caliber as her earlier works. This was most evident when fans criticized Lawrence’s performance as Mystique in the X-Men films.

Jennifer Lawrence took some time away to reevaluate and recharge before stepping back onto the scene. For someone like Anne Hathaway, who once stated that she’d be “lost” without acting, the idea of hatred online causing her to disappear probably would be something she’d discard immediately. Anne Hathaway is an actress who prides herself on remaining who she is and doesn’t allow herself to be influenced by the hateful words of others. No matter how much people may despise her, Hathaway continues to prove her doubters wrong with her performances onscreen.
