The Netflix biopic Blonde has been recognized by the Golden Globes with a nomination for Best Actress for Ana de Armas. The actress celebrated with a post on Instagram of her and her supporters as she carries a huge bouquet of pink roses for the occasion. Also included in the set of photos are scenes with a cameraman and a short video.

Blonde is a historical fiction about the private life of Marilyn Monroe, and Ana de Armas stars as the iconic actress and sex symbol. The movie was released on September 16, and checks in at 2 hours and 47 minutes as it retells the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. It frames the life of the famous starlet as a conflict between the real-life Norma Jeanne and her breathy alter ego.

While critics have only given it middling reviews, anyone who sees a picture of Ana de Armas in the role can tell that she managed to embody Marilyn Monroe nearly perfectly. The choice by director Andrew Dominik to shoot the film in black and white enhances this uncanny similarity in a variety of candid scenes and appearances. However, it was still a pleasant surprise for the movie’s star to be honored with a Golden Globe nomination.

The Cuban actress got her start by acting in Spanish-language movies and shows and first entered the American mainstream when Eli Roth cast her in the 2015 thriller Knock Knock, which also starred Keanu Reeves and Roth’s then-wife, Lorenza Izzo. She later appeared as Joi in Blade Runner 2049, but her breakout role came from the Rian Johnson murder mystery Knives Out. In that film, Ana de Armas portrayed the nurse of the murder victim, who helps Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc solve the case.

Blonde has been met with controversy as some critics accuse it of using Ana De Arma’s expression of the movie star to fetishize female pain. The movie does seem to focus on the trauma that drove decisions made by Norma Jean and channeled through her performance as Marilyn Monroe. This includes an abusive, mentally ill mother, pressure from studios and publicists about her career, and incidents of sexual assault, alcoholism, and drug use.

The movie also received an NC-17 rating, which it earned because there were explicit sex scenes and depictions of domestic abuse. Had it been a theatrical release, this may have had a profound effect on its distribution. The Ana de Armas movie might not have had as many viewers, as an NC-17 rating is often a death knell for movies.

However, streaming services operate differently and produce a lot of unrated or mature-rated content that includes graphic violence, nudity, sex, and other adult situations. Shows such as Amazon Prime’s The Boys and the Netflix reality show/zombie crossover Reality Z don’t hold back on gore and the very popular Dahmer series examines the life of the infamous serial killer. Ana de Armas is also no stranger to mature themes, as Knock Knock featured her as a troubled woman sexually harassing a man in his isolated home.

To see Ana de Armas in her Golden Globe-nominated role, catch Blonde on Netflix. Knives Out is also on Netflix, giving fans plenty of ways to see the actress before the awards. See if she wins at The Golden Globes ceremony, which will be airing on NBC on January 10, 2023.
