In the wake of the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial, things are still quite up in the air about how things will shake out for each of the main parties. There’s quite a bit of money on the line following the ruling from the jury in the case and battle lines have still been drawn over the sides. But never underestimate the motivation for those to try and capitalize on the situation, possibly for their own personal benefit. That seems to be what almost happened with a GoFundMe campaign reportedly trying to help Amber Heard pay off what she now might owe Johnny Depp following the trial.

According to Insider and TMZ, a GoFundMe campaign cropped up in the wake of the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard verdict that was claiming to be raising money to help Heard raise $1 million dollars of the $10 million she is now supposed to owe Depp. The fundraiser claimed that it was in contact with Heard’s legal team and that they were working together to make sure all of the funds would go directly to the actress. But apparently, this was all fake and the fundraising platform had to take down the campaign. It’s unclear if the plan for the campaign was to ever actually hand over the funds, or if it was just preying on those who were trying to support Amber Heard.

According to GoFundMe, the platform will always remove campaigns that aren’t directly approved by the person meant to get the funds. In this case, apparently, Amber Heard and her team weren’t responsible for the campaign or at least denied it once questioned. Either way, it was taken and donations were no longer being received. It’s just another strange twist in the ongoing mess that has been the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard saga over the last few years, something that doesn’t seem like it will end with the court’s ruling this past week.

When the trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp concluded, the jury had concluded that both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were liable for damages related to defamation. Because they were each suing each other, the rulings happened simultaneously, Johnny Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages (plus $5 million in punitive, though that was lowered to $350K) and Amber Heard was awarded $2 million from Depp. Simple math says that Amber Heard now owes Johnny Depp $8 million.

And this situation is likely far from over. There appear plans for Amber Heard and her team to appeal the decision and send this back to the courts for another go-around, in some form or another. The actress has claimed she was exercising her right to freedom of speech in the op-ed printed in the Washington Post that was at the heart of this initial lawsuit by Johnny Depp. Whether another set of jurors sees it that way remains to be seen. There’s still some chance we get other GoFundMe pages popping up before it is all said and done.
