Amber Heard is still set to return as Mera in the upcoming DC superhero sequel, Aquaman 2. With all of the controversy surrounding her and ex-husband Johnny Depp, there is a strong contingent of fans that seem to be dead set on getting her removed from the production. And a petition that asks Warner Bros. to do just that is about to hit a pretty significant milestone.

The Change.org petition to have Amber Heard removed from Aquaman 2 is gaining signatures with every passing minute and it is very close to hitting 2 million signatures. There are plenty of internet petitions that make the rounds and gather a sizable amount of signatures, but it is somewhat rare to see one get upwards of 2 million signatures. Whether or not this petition will have any impact on Warner Bros.’ decision to bring the actresses back is something worth asking.

In fact, it does seem like Warner Bros. is aware of the petition. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Amber Heard acknowledged the petition and said, “Paid rumors and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality.” She seems to be very confident that Warner Bros. is on her side and will confirm her return to Aquaman 2.

Will they? there is no question that there has been a substantial amount of backlash regarding Amber Heard’s involvement with Aquaman 2, and the ongoing drama between her and ex-husband Johnny Depp continues to make waves in the entertainment industry. While she has been able to keep her jobs for the foreseeable future, Depp has seen himself be removed from the Fantastic Beasts franchise after only shooting a single day’s worth of footage. If the narrative stays in Heard’s favor, it sounds like she might even get a chance to headline even more franchises.

But, that petition continues to nab signatures and it will likely cross 2 million names before the year is out. Are there really that many people with a vested interest in seeing Amber Heard be removed from Aquaman 2? Or is it like Heard alleges and there is a movement against her that is being manipulated by outfits like troll farms? It would not be the first time that such a targeted effort was made to affect something in Hollywood. Rian Johnson illuminated this very fact during production on Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi as he revealed a number of Russian accounts that were responding negatively to his involvement with the film.

At the same time, there is no concrete evidence at this moment to suggest that such a manipulated effort is connected to the Change.org petition against Amber Heard. We will simply have to wait and see if the petition continues to gain signatures and if it reaches a point that becomes unavoidable for Warner Bros. to ignore. Perhaps they have already made up their minds and nothing is going to stop them from bringing back Amber Heard as Mera in Aquaman 2.
