Back To The Future: The Real Cost Of Doc Brown’s Mansion And A DeLorean Limo

Back to the FutureWho knew that the characters in Back to the Future were such ballers? We certainly didn’t, but apparently we were wrong. For example, Emmett Lathrop “Doc” Brown, perfectly portrayed by Christopher Lloyd. His house may be big, but it appears run down and shabby at first glance, but according to a new infographic, it is worth far more than you might initially expect. And then there’s his ride. Sure, he has made some serious custom modifications to his stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12, but even in 1985, it was widely recognized as a total dog of a car. That is until you see the stretch limousine that one intrepid inventor created.

Because it’s the Internet, and this is the sort of thing you do here, the team at MOVOTO real estate has taken it upon themselves to calculate the real-world value of Doc Brown’s mansion. They consider factors like square footage, power usage, and suburban northern California location to calculate the value of the property, but in 1955 as well as the modern world.

Doc Brown & The DeLorean Are In The New A Million Ways To Die In The West Trailer

Back to the Future 3If you didn’t already run out this weekend to see the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron joint Neighbors, you should. It really sets the bar for big, raunchy, R-rated comedies this summer, and not only is it totally hilarious, it’s way better written than it needs to be. But, science fiction fans have another reason to see this movie in the theater. One of the movies that will try to surpass Neighbors is Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West. A green band trailer for that film plays before Neighbors. This is something super new, something that hasn’t made its way online yet, so we can’t actually show it to you, but at the very end Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and the DeLorean from Back to the Future show up for a quick visit.

Our publisher, fellow science fiction addict, and all around rad guy, Josh, went to see Neighbors, and described the scene for us. The sets in A Million Ways already look a lot like those from Back to the Future Part III, when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown have an adventure in the old west. That’s not too surprising, MacFarlane is a big fan of this kind of homage, just look at what he did with Flash Gordon a few years ago in Ted, not to mention the obsessive pop culture references of Family Guy.

The DeLorean, The TARDIS, And More Get Their Due In Classic Movie Vehicle Posters

DeLorean
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from science fiction over the years, it’s that you simply have to have a classy mode of transport if you’re going to be adventuring through time and/or space. Maybe it’s a hover-converted DeLorean that just also happens to be a plutonium-powered time machine. Maybe it doesn’t look like much, but it’s got it where it counts. Maybe it’s even stuck looking like a big blue police box. But whatever it is, there’s a pretty good chance a dude named Kevin has made a badass poster representing it.

Robots Galore At This Year’s CES (Plus Doc Brown And A DeLorean)

AlibabaI officially have a new entry on my bucket list — someday, I will attend CES, the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) international conference showcasing the best inventions and innovations from around the world. With over 3,000 exhibits and 300 conferences and sessions, this is a tech geek’s dream. They’ve got electronics, computers, gaming, telecommunications, driverless cars, and, most importantly, robots. And more robots. For those of us who didn’t get to attend the conference, I’m sure we’ll see some of these bots on the market soon. Until then, here’s a preview to get you all excited and ready to shell out dough for these robots that perform very specific tasks.

DeLorean Inventor Had Plans For A Laser Combustion Engine

delorean engineBefore this post, I didn’t know much about engineer John DeLorean, other than that he developed a number of cars, including one featured in one of the best movies of all time. He also had a colored history that included a trial for trafficking cocaine, which he managed to overcome by proving entrapment. But what do you expect, the guy was born in Detroit. (Kidding! I grew up in Michigan and would never speak ill of the mitten!) Anyway, his engineering prowess extends past the Pontiac series and his iconic winged car. Turns out that Mr. DeLorean had some pretty crazy ideas — namely, a design for a cutting-edge engine with a laser ignition.

Back To The Future Fanatic Builds DeLorean Time Machine Replica

DeLorean

I totally understand people who are obsessed with Back to the Future. I saw the movie when I was seven, and in my little-kid brain I had Michael J. Fox confused with Michael Jackson and was shocked when the protagonist turned out to be a cute white kid (who knew this confusion would be prophetic?). In retrospect, my love of all things sci-fi, especially when time travel’s involved, can be traced back this movie’s introduction into my life. Later, in graduate school, I studied the script — in my screenwriting class it was regarded as a textbook example of three-act structure, and we marveled at the organic yet perfectly paced progression of events and character development. As an adult, I love the film on levels unimaginable to my seven-year-old self. But I’m unremarkable compared to the legions of Back to the Future fanatics out there — particularly those who have bought DeLoreans and turned them into time machines.
