Get Ready To Be Buried Up To Your Neck In Pacific Rim Merch

fb share tweet share

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was always going to be a hit. It has giant monsters doing battle with giant robots, what red-blooded American doesn’t want to see that on the big screen? You can tell that the people at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. also expect the movie to rake in a ton of cash. Why do I say this? Because they’re planning to unleash a metric butt ton of Pacific Rim merchandise upon the world. Are you ready to be buried beneath a pile of products emblazoned with a big ass robot?

Guillermo Del Toro Says Pacific Rim 2 Will Be Shot In 3D

The hype surrounding Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is almost as big as the giant robots and giant monsters it features. Legendary Pictures is already talking about a sequel film, before the movie is even released. But del Toro wants to assure his fans that Pacific Rim 2 would be shot in 3D and not up-converted, “provided, at that point, that the technology is becoming easier and easier,” said the director.

In an interview with the Playlist, Guillermo del Toro spoke about the challenges of making a 3D movie and the confidence he has with the current 3D up-conversion of Pacific Rim. Del Toro says:

Even then they were super respectful. By then we were already getting ILM shots. I was realizing that out of 100 shots, maybe 10% of the shots were risky. They said, ‘If we go 2D on those shots, we can do it.’ Then I gave them my list of conditions. They spent twice of what they normally spend on [this process], because they gave me the chance to pay ILM to do every single shot in native 3D. They aren’t being converted. So all the big 3D effects shots are being done by ILM from the get go.

Let Them Not Eat Cake! Pacific Rim’s GLaDOS-lite Jaeger A.I. A Definite Nod To Portal

GLADOS

If Guillermo del Toro’s career has taught us anything, it’s that the man will put his money and efforts where his interests lie, even if that project never makes it past the concept stage. His name is attached to damned near everything that isn’t a romantic comedy or a war documentary. It’s been over four long years since Del Toro’s last directorial effort, 2008’s Hellboy II, but Pacific Rim looks to plug him right back into the theatrical forefront, with mech guns blazing. And it really makes me GLaD…OS.

The latest sign of Del Toro’s personal tastes comes in the form of a voiceover, the one you probably recognized from the trailer as belonging to GLaDOS, the deviously malicious A.I. system guiding players in the fan-favorite Portal games by Valve Corporation. The distinctly vocoded voice, as performed by opera singer Ellen McLain, appears in the trailer as an intentionally direct replica of the game’s antagonist, though Del Toro says the feature itself will use a different modulation of McLain’s voice. “The filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS,” he explains, causing game fans everywhere to consider donating their organs to a Self-Esteem Fund for Girls.

Pacific Rim is one of our most anticipated movies of 2013, and not just because it involves giant mechs punching giant monsters in the kisser. Okay, that’s like 97% of why we’re excited about it, but the fact that it’s being directed by Guillermo del Toro certainly doesn’t hurt. Everything we’ve seen from the flick so far looks amazing, and now a new trailer has popped up online…assuming it hasn’t already been pulled down by the time you read this.
