Comic(s) Relief: How Did Howard The Duck Wind Up In The Collector’s Collection?

fb share tweet share

Ever since Samuel L. Jackson showed up as Nick Fury in the post-credits sequence to Iron Man, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe films have had a tradition of serving up a little something awesome for the folks who stick around until after that bit about which film stock the movie used. Usually these little teasers have set up the next movie in the over-arching continuity, but Guardians of the Galaxy — in typical irreverent fashion — instead introduced an obscure Marvel character into the MCU canon. Moviegoers who weren’t hardcore fans were probably just confused when an anthropomorphic duck showed up to talk smack to Benecio del Toro’s Collector, but true fans knew that duck’s name was Howard, and that he was around long before George Lucas’ much-maligned ’80s flick. Now Marvel’s print side plans to follow up on the Guardians movie’s tease, with an upcoming comic story revealing just how Howard wound up in The Collector’s collection.

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a new era for George Lucas’ beloved galaxy far, far away will begin, one which will define the franchise’s legacy as it extends into the 21st century. And with the Force Awakens trailer having racked up an insane number of viewings, it’s no surprise that fans have been riffing on it pretty much from the instant it went online. We’ve seen the trailer sweded and mashed up and even redone in neon. So why not reimagined in the style of an 8-bit ‘80s video game?

Avengers Age of UltronWith the massive success of Guardians of the Galaxy this past year, and the gargantuan hype leading up to Avengers: Age of Ultron, there’s been endless talk about a possible crossover between the two Marvel franchises. Most of us expect them to come together in some capacity eventually, despite James Gunn’s protestations that Guardians does not exist solely to serve the Avengers world, but that ball might get rolling sooner than we thought. Like maybe this May, when Ultron drops.

James Gunn Live Guardians Of The Galaxy Commentary Is Chock-Full Of Information

guardians of the galaxyAs a fan, James Gunn is exactly the kind of director you want helming a movie. Sure, he makes wonderful nerdy films like Slither and Guardians of the Galaxy, but he’s also super enthusiastic and loves to interact with fans. All through the process of Guardians, from preproduction to the home video release, he’s been all over social media, sharing images, news, extras, and generally looking like he’s having a really good time. He recently hosted a live commentary/Q&A session on his Facebook page, where fans could pop in their own copy of Guardians and watch along as he “talked,” and more than a few interesting tidbits about the movie, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy 2, came out.

If you, like most of us, have scoured the very depths of your Guardians Blu-ray, you know Gunn already recorded a commentary track, which is a fun, informative good time. But you also probably know that he loves to talk about his movie, and has a lot to say, so you know another go round isn’t super outlandish. He can fill the time.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: How One Artist Inspired The Look Of The Entire Movie

fb share tweet share

There’s a lot to love about Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The crackerjack script by director James Gunn and Nicole Perlman is funny, fast-paced, and evocative of classic flicks like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The dynamite cast all inhabit their roles perfectly, and have (inter)stellar comedic chemistry with each other. And overseeing it all, Gunn conjures up a detailed, colorful world I can’t wait to return to again and again. And that word — “colorful” — is an important one. In a genre where outer space is all too often rendered in shades of black, white, and grey, Guardians plays with all the other crayons, and that creative choice owes a lot to the work of one artist — Chris Foss — and, even more specifically, to the image below.

Check Out This Stunning Guardians Of The Galaxy Concept Art

Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy is a gorgeous film. It may be full of high action, sarcastic humor, and a talking raccoon and tree, but director James Gunn, Marvel, and everyone involved also took great pains to create an immersive, fully realized world. When you strive to create something wholly new and different and alien, it takes a lot of time and effort, and starts and stops and different versions, as we’ve seen from the constant flow of concept art that has trickled out since the film hit theaters back in August. Because we can never get enough of this sort of thing, we’ve get even more with this extensive gallery.

These are from artist Olivier Pron, who served as the lead matte painter for Guardians of the Galaxy, and they show off some of the ideas for Xandar, the home planet of the Nova Corps, and where a significant amount of the action is set. There’s something about many of these that almost feel like a dreamy videogame, like you and your avatar could roam these environments and get into all kinds of mischief and adventures.
