I was one of the few people who actually had a pretty good time with the widely hated 1998 Godzilla rehash. That doesn’t mean I don’t recognize how shitty it is, but Hank Azaria does a lot for making this film watchable, and I mean come on, what else did you expect out of a Roland Emmerich film? Nonetheless, the sequel that film was left wide open for will never exist, and even though that movie was rough, Godzilla is a name that will get people’s attention, so it should come as no surprise that there’s a reboot on the way.
THR has it that this new take on the ravager of Japan has just signed on a new writer in the form of Max Borenstein. Borenstein doesn’t have a lot to his credit, just an upcoming film called The Seventh Son to star Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, but with a story like Godzilla you don’t have to be all that creative. At the helm is Monsters director Gareth Edwards who will likely bring a human element to the story that people actually care about.
