One of the many things Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica reboot had going for it was Bear McCreary’s amazing score. It was by turns sweeping, epic, emotional, and evocative of the sense of mystery and wonder the show often explored. It felt like exactly the right music for the show, even before “All Along the Watchtower” entered the equation. But how would the tale of the ragtag human fleet’s search for a planet called Earth play out with very different musical accompaniment? Say, that of the classic 1986 Tom Cruise flick Top Gun. Is the upcoming Syfy show Defiance on your radar? If not, it should be, because it’s the creation of Rockne O’Bannon, the man who gave us one of the greatest, and most underrated, science fiction shows of all time in the form of Farscape. Since that show wrapped up with the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries in 2004, O’Bannon served as consulting producer on ABC’s V remake, but we haven’t seen any new shows actually created by the man. Thankfully that’s changing with Defiance, a project that just became even more exciting thanks to the announcement that Battlestar Galactica/The Walking Dead composer Bear McCreary will serve as the show’s music supervisor.
The word came via a tweet from Syfy senior executive Craig Engler, who didn’t provide any more details beyond McCreary’s involvement. Defiance is set in the near future, after a “universal war” has ravaged the Earth. The show follows a group of survivors as they attempt to build a new society in the aftermath. Game producer Trion Worlds are working in partnership with the show to produce a multiplatform shooter MMO that will connect to the show and debut at the same time. Supposedly the show and game will interact in various ways, forming “a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.”
No, the title of this story is not a joke. If you’re like me, in addition to being blown away by the show as a whole, you’re totally in love with the BSG score, which is the stuff of a great composer named Bear McCreary. Apparently I’m not the only one who went scrambling on to the internet frantically searching for a place to download more of his music after last season’s mind blowng, music-powered finale. In fact, he’s so in demand his Battlestar Galactica music will be played live, and in concert.
It’s happening April 15th at the Roxy theater, and tickets are officially on sale and selling out RIGHT NOW. If you want in, you’d better get movie. Details, via their press release:
