Modern videogames owe a huge debt to James Cameron’s Aliens. First-person shooters have been aping the feel and pacing of Cameron’s action/SF classic for years. How many times have we played one of a wisecracking group of soldiers up against a vicious alien threat? How many of the generic foes that have flickered through our crosshairs bore more than a passing resemblance to Giger’s xenomorphs?
Yes, games have been aping Cameron’s work for decades, but for some reason the attempts to actually make a game set in the Alien/Aliens universe have yielded mixed results at best. Sega and Gearbox Software are hoping to change that next fall with the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines, as close a direct sequel to Cameron’s film as we’re ever likely to get.
