I know it’s Friday, but tonight was no time for half-crazed drunken carousing. The best show on television returned to the Sci Fi Channel this evening, and if you were foolish enough to be out pursuing the opposite sex at 10 EST, then I hope you’ve at least been smart enough to set aside time tomorrow in which you’ll curl up next to your Tivo. Who needs real women when you could spend an hour with Kara Thrace?
BSG is back, and it’s not wasting any time. Unlike what we’ve seen in previous years, there was no time lapse between seasons in which things happened off camera. Battlestar Galactica Season 4 picks up right where Season 3′s finale left off. The Cylons are closing in, the fleet can’t jump to FTL, and Starbuck has come back from the dead. You’d better be able to keep up.
It’s episode one and we’re in the thick of things, with plot and character flying like chaff around the Galactica. If you saw Season 3 then you knew where this episode at least, was going. Kara is back and claims she’s found Earth. Is she real? Is she a Cylon? Is she the antichrist? Rosalyn thinks she knows the way to Earth as well, unfortunately her way is in the opposite direction. In the background, we now know four of the final five Cylons. How the hell do they cope? What should they do? How do they deal? For now at least, they simply do their jobs while they try to figure things out.
This first episode didn’t provide any of the answers we’re all looking for in this, the show’s final season. But then of course it shouldn’t. Instead, “He That Believeth In Me” is all about launching us back into this world and setting us up for what’s to come. And as usual, BSG is viciously brilliant. The special effects are mind blowing, the acting is better than anything you’ll see in an Oscar winner, and the story is every bit as gripping as always. Hang on, if this premiere is any indicator, then the final season of BSG is going to blow our minds.
