Gamora & Yondu UdontaIn August 2014, Marvel Studios will release its ninth feature film in six years, Guardians of the Galaxy, The space adventure is a different brand of superhero movie, one that centers on outlaws, warriors, and aliens. It’s doesn’t place on Earth, and will feature no human characters, only half-humans. If Marvel can sell a general audience on this weirdness then the comic book giant can sell just about anything. Production wrapped on the space opera about a month ago, and now some of its stars are talking about the film.

Promoting her new film, Out of the Furnace, Zoe Saldana talked to MTV about how different Guardians is in comparison to its Marvel siblings. The 35-year-old actress plays the Zen-Whoberian Gamora, who is the adopted daughter of the Mad Titan Thanos and the leader of the cosmic female warriors known as the Graces. The characters in this movie are not your typical superheroes. Saldana explained:

A new way to view superheroes… we’re making heroes after thieves and they’re Robin Hoods and I love that because I’m an underdog. I always like the longer route, the hardest route, because that’s the only one that’s going to teach you great lessons in life and these characters are absolutely amazing and they have a full blown redemption.

Leave it up to James Gunn to make a subversive superhero movie. Although Guardians is only Gunn’s third film, the 43-year-old director already made a twisted comic book movie that goes against typical expectations for the genre expectations. While it’s doubtful that Gunn will push boundaries as far as he did in Super in 2010, he will most likely turn what we know about Marvel movies on its head.

Meanwhile, Michael Rooker opened up about his character, Yondu Udonta. Considering Rooker’s physique and demeanor, he was the perfect choice to play one of the villains. The other bad guys are The Collector, Ronan The Accuser, and the space pirate Nebula, who is another member of the Graces. While it is believed that all the characters in the new film are, in fact, villains, there are varies degrees of badness when it comes to this film. When Total Film asked him about his superpowers, Rooker responded:

I don’t think I’m at liberty to discuss any powers of any sort… Y’know, most of the roles I play, just by it being who I am – normally they’re somewhat formidable individuals. That’s just sort of my look and my build. So we utilise that in almost everything I’ve done, and it’s the same in Guardians.

According to Gunn, the story follows “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.” The movie stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014.
