Later this summer, The World’s End will bring to a close the much-loved “Cornetto Trilogy” from co-conspirators Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. This fact is played up in the film’s latest trailer, which also features plenty of new footage to gawk at. The film opens in the U.S. on August 23.

In their previous efforts, Wright and company have sent up both zombie movies with Shaun of the Dead, and high-octane police acitoners with Hot Fuzz. This time around, they’re setting their sights on the sci-fi side of things. When five old, estranged friends — Pegg, Frost, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, and Martin Freeman — get together in their home town to complete an epic pub crawl, things are not quite like they remember them. As in there are crazy, blue-eyed, possibly alien, possibly robot things all over the streets. Usually it’s just a new strip mall.

This trailer is heavy on the spoilers, but also heavy on the action. I love the bit when Pegg’s Gary King tries to impress Rosamund Pike by jumping off a roof and wounding himself grievously. It’s also nice to see that they’re keeping with the Simon-Pegg-jumping-over-a-fence-and-it-goes-wrong gag. That’s a fan favorite. All in all, this looks like a pretty good time. And if the previous two movies are any indicator, it should be equally as effective a sci-fi movie as it is a comedy. Wright has a way of synthesizing multiple genres into a delightful single package.

The World’s End looks to continue the trend of movies this year that somehow obliterate all or most life on Earth. This joins a club that already includes Oblivion, After Earth, and This Is the End</i>, with more still to come.
