Over the weekend we got our first look at the new trailer for the Brad Pitt zombie vehicle World War Z. The struggles of this production have been well documented here and elsewhere, and so far what we’ve seen from the film hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. So surprise, surprise, this trailer actually makes the movie look pretty damn good. There’s action, tension, and a personal story to go along with the wider global-outbreak angle. And hot on the heels of this new trailer, we’ve got a pair of new posters to go along with the video.

The posters are basically the exact same image, but rendered with a different background. One of the key images thus far in the marketing materials for World War Z has been a swarm of rapidly moving undead piling up, making what is essentially a corpse ladder, so they can get over high walls. That’s precisely what you see here, except the zombie stack is trying to get their grabby little mitts on a helicopter that is attempting to take off.

I have to say, watching the most recent footage of from the film, for the first time I see how they may keep the framework from Max Brooks’ novel intact. The book is a series of vignettes, collected after humanity has already survived the zombie wars. Aside from the journalist travelling around gathering survivor’s stories, a character that never appears in the foreground, there is no through line in the novel, and it seemed almost unfilmable to some readers. It appears that the way the script handles this is to bring the reporter—a UN worker in the film—to the forefront, and have him travel around the globe, experiencing these stories for himself, rather than hearing the tales afterwards. We’ll see how well it fits.

Directed by Marc Forster (The Amazing Spider-Man), World War Z also stars Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox, and David Morse. For good or ill, the movie swarms theaters June 21st.
