Wil Wheaton Will Host A Falling Skies Chat Show

AMC has The Talking Dead, a talkshow following each new episode of The Walking Dead in which nerd icon Chris Hardwicke discusses the episode you just saw. Now TNT plans to copy that template and use it on Falling Skies. They’ve hired geek icon Wil Wheaton to host a Falling Skies themed talkshow called 2nd Watch.

The 15-minute show will air following each new Falling Skies episode. Scheduled guests include, well, the cast of Falling Skies of course. Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton and the rest are all scheduled to appear. More important than the guests, I think, is Wil Wheaton. I’ve always thought him a better than average host, it’ll be nice to see him get a legitimate shot at something like this.

That said, there’s one big flaw in this plan: The Walking Dead is The Walking Dead and Falling Skies is Falling Skies. Both cater to a similar audience but The Walking Dead is a wildly popular, critically acclaimed show while Falling Skies is not exactly a runaway hit and even science fiction fans aren’t entirely sure it’s worth their time yet. There’s barely enough audience to support The Talking Dead, I’m not really sure who’s going to actually go through the trouble to stick around and tune in to 2nd Watch. Speaking as someone who both likes Wil Wheaton and enjoys Falling Skies… I probably won’t.

I’m interested. However, the show needs to make a lot of improvements. I’m only sticking around because of the sad state of sci-fi on television. Sy-Fy doesn’t matter anymore, so I’m desperate for anything to pan-out.

I feel the same way about the show. This second season is critical. They could turn it into something or it could just keep going like it is and, I suspect, will as a result lose whatever audience has stuck with it.

First of all, Falling Skies is awesome, get on board. Second, I’d be more likely to watch 2nd Watch simply because it’s only fifteen minutes. It’s barely a second show so much as an add-on to the episode whereas Talking Dead is a half hour, it is definitively an extra time commitment. I love Wil Wheaton, so I’m bound to check out anything he’s doing and again, I think Falling Skies is fantastic. I love the concept. I love the execution, and I hope more people get into it.
