“I Think I’m a Clone Now”
Even Worse‘s “I Think I’m a Clone Now” was the first time I’d heard heard of a petri dish, as five-year-old me probably assumed that clones were created in magic Jetsons machines or something. This spoof of Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now,” which was itself a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’ original track, presents the song’s narrator as someone noticing that he has a clone and that his chromosomes are hand-me-downs. It doesn’t take long for the obvious rewards of such a situation to make themselves clear. You can send yourself out for pizza, so why wouldn’t you want a clone?

“Germs”
And finally, this Nine Inch Nails soundalike brings an industrial heaviness to a song that is essentially a guy having a David Cronenberg movie playing out inside his head as he thinks about all of the germs covering his body. Perhaps this is more hyper-obsessive-compulsive disorder rather than science fiction, but he talks about bacteria and parasites and microscopes. That’s pretty much all sci-fi is, right? Admittedly, this track is less memorable than the previously mentioned Running With Scissors songs, as well as the positively amazing “Albuquerque,” but it definitely beats “Pretty Fly for a Rabbi.”
