Watch The Trailer For The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Fan Film

From Batman to Superman, it seems like taking an existing franchise and making it darker and grittier is the trend in pop culture. There are countless reboots and remakes that go down this dark and scary road. The newest property to make this journey is The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Director Barry Worthington made a proof-of-concept trailer, where he takes the Power Rangers and makes them wish they never received their colorful powers.

In an interview, Worthington cites Frank Miller’s The Killing Joke as inspiration for his Power Rangers trailer. (I bet you never thought you’d hear those two mentioned in the same sentence. – Ed.) He wanted to put a darker tone onto the Power Rangers while retaining their rich mythology. Worthington is not affiliated with Haim Saban, the company who actually owns the rights to the Power Rangers. He is just a loyal fan who wanted to make a mature adaptation of his favorite childhood series.

Worthington wants to focus the series or film on the first two seasons of The Power Rangers. He would also center the story of his series on fan-favorite Tommy (the Green Ranger). While in battle with longtime foe Lord Zedd, Tommy creates a rift between himself and the rest of the Power Rangers; he must work hard to fix his relationship with the group and defeat Zedd. Worthington added that he would replace the Rangers’ colorful spandex with full-motion body armor.

Like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are long overdue for a comeback. Their style, banter, and absurd battle gear need to be revisited in either a new TV series or movie. The children of the ’90s would appreciate that!

“The Killing Joke” is by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland; Frank Miller did “The Dark Knight [Returns]“, which seems to be the bigger influence here.
