Watch The Pacific Rim Comic-Con Panel
The days leading up to Comic-Con, Warner Bros/Legendary released a few images of Idris Elba (Prometheus), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, The Brothers Bloom) in their mech suits for the movie Pacific Rim. They also released an epic poster featuring a giant freakin’ robot. Now you can watch the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel featuring director Guillermo del Toro and the cast of Pacific Rim including Charlie Day and Ron Perlman.
The video starts with an introduction of the Head of Legendary Pictures, Thomas Tull. He talks about how much he loved the Pacific Rim script featuring giant robots and sea monsters and wondering what director could bring this script to life. After namedropping, Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder, Tull brought out the jovial Guillermo del Toro. Director del Toro talked about how much this project saved his life; presumably after the yearlong fiasco he had on The Hobbit. He wanted to make Pacific Rim an adventure movie instead of a war movie. He wanted to create a sense of awe in the audience with its 25 story robots and epic battle sequences.
Guillermo del Toro also talks about the giant robots called Jaegars. They need two pilots, in the robot’s head, to control them. One pilot controls the left side and the other controls the right. But they both need to work together to make the Jaegar move as one. Of course, the footage from Pacific Rim was not shown on this video because the footage was exclusive to the Hall H crowd.
Del Toro developed the film from the mindset of a young fan of monsters and robots and not a studio executive. He wanted to create something that looked cool and worked practically. Looking at Guillermo del Toro’s other movies, you know he can create a world full of imagination with a resonate, emotional center.
Pacific Rim will be released on July 12th 2013.
