Enough about J.J. Abrams and Star Wars. Let’s talk about J.J. Abrams and Star Trek instead. With only three and a half months until the release of Star Trek Into Darkness this May, it feels like the latest Star Wars news might have undercut buzz for J.J. Abrams current project somewhat. To get excited about the upcoming sequel again, check out this amazing homemade shot-for-shot remake of the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer below.

Filmmaker Dustin McLean created the trailer and it speaks volumes of his sense of imagination and ability to recreate the same tone and feel as the original. According to McLean’s website, DustFilms.com, the homemade teaser trailer was shot using only an iPhone with no visual effects. Now that’s really impressive!

Of course, Abrams’ version is more expensive than McLean’s, but the comparison video just goes to show you how far you can go with an iPhone, a keen eye, and a group of friends.

Dustin McLean is an award-winning director whose work was featured on the show “SuperNews!” for Current TV. He mainly creates viral videos for YouTube, and has a series of other shot-for-shot trailers for movies such as Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Jurassic Park. He also created the “Literal Music Video” parody Internet meme in 2008.

Star Trek Into Darkness will beam into theaters everywhere on May 17th in IMAX 3D.
