On the surface, The Host appears to be another sappy teenage melodrama from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, but when you dig a little deeper it looks like it might be something worth watching this March. Check out the new behind-the-scenes footage from The Host below.

Saoirse Ronan is fantastic! It’s very refreshing to watch her talk about doing some of her own stunts. From the behind-the-scenes footage it looks like The Host has the potential to be the sleeper hit of the spring.

The Host has an interesting narrative. People around the world are infected by an alien race called “Souls.” They take over a person’s body and wipe any memory of their past life. Irish actor Saoirse Ronan plays Melanie Stryder, a young woman who is part of a small group of resistance fighters. But when she becomes infected, she tries to fight off the parasitic aliens as they slowly take over her mind and body. The Host also features Jake Abel, Max Irons, Chandler Canterbury, Frances Fisher, Diane Kruger, and William Hurt.

The movie sounds like an updated version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, only with teenagers and emo angst. Andrew Niccol directed the film and adapted the screenplay from Stephenie Meyer’s original novel. Niccol has a good track record with high-concept movies, including Gattaca and The Truman Show, but then again he made In Time and Lord of War. Based on the promotional material we’ve seen so far, including the film’s trailer and some images, it’s unclear if The Host will be a hit or a miss, but we will surely find out this March.

The Host will infect theaters everywhere on March 29th.
