The Walking Dead Fights Back In This Tense New Teaser

Over the years The Walking Dead and I have had a troubled relationship. AMC’s hit zombie drama has some things that I legitimately enjoy and appreciate, but then there are aspects that drive me absolutely bonkers (both as a long time fan of Robert Kirkman’s comics and as someone easily frustrated by bad television). To call the massively popular series (a popularity that still baffles me) uneven is an understatement, but even I, with my overwhelming skepticism, find myself getting increasingly excited for the upcoming season 5. My feelings are primarily based on the fact that the last half of season 4 is the best the show has ever been, but badass new promos like this one definitely don’t hurt matters any.

You see quick flashes of the core group of characters stuck intense, harrowing situations, some involve walkers, some do not, but beyond that, you this video drives home that the beginning of season 5 is going to see some serious human conflict. When Rick (Andrew Lincoln) adopts his serious man voice, telling his compatriots that, if they come across one of these people, to kill them, because they’ll certainly kill you, we assume that he’s referring to the people currently holding them prisoner at Terminus. And the way they left things last year, you know that it’s going to get brutal and bloody very quick.

The Walking DeadThis teaser really watches like a live-action version of a bunch of the still photos that we’ve already seen from season 5 of The Walking Dead. We’ve seen Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) and his sister Sasha (Sonequa Martin Green) in this scenario before…

The Walking Dead…Abraham is still stuck behind that burned out husk of a car…

The Walking Dead…we’ve encountered Maggie (Lauren Cohan) in this particular sticky situation before…

The Walking Dead…this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Glen (Steven Yeun) surrounded by hungry walkers in this warehouse hallway…

The Walking Dead…we’ve seen photographic evidence before that Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) will be reunited in this train yard, whatever the true nature of their relationship may be…

The Walking Dead…no one is surprised that a brief glimpse at Michonne (Danai Gurira) features her wearing a stern expression on her face, brandishing her trademark katana…

The Walking Dead…and Rick and Daryl are still blasting away at either the undead or at some of their new human foes. Perhaps Gareth (Andrew J. West) and his cronies are out there, serving as target practice for the survivors.

The Walking DeadWe’ve even seen a poster version of this “Hunt or be Hunted” mock up.

It’s good that they’re not giving away too much about the upcoming season. Over the previous seasons, there has usually been a prolonged gap in the action, usually of at least a couple of months, but given the way season 4 ended, we’ve been promised time and again by the producers that season 5 “hits the ground running.” Apparently that includes an opening scene so shocking it even surprised the cast when they saw it cut together for the first time. That sounds promising indeed.

The Walking Dead season 5 premieres on October 12 on AMC.
