The Walking DeadAMC’s hit zombie drama The Walking Dead is gradually shuffling towards the October 12 premiere of season 5. Given the massive number of viewers the show raked in last year, the debut is sure to be a ratings juggernaut—we’ve also been promised that they hit the ground running after the cliffhanger at the end of season 4 and that the first scene shocked even the stars when they saw it edited together the first time. Just in case you didn’t already have this day circled on your calendar (do people still do that?), the network released a gallery of 20 new images from the upcoming episodes.

Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) sexuality has been a hot topic of discussion lately, with rumors that he might be gay making the rounds. That has neither been confirmed nor denied, though producers did confirm that there is a gay character, Daryl or not, on the way before too long. One of the reasons for this speculation about the younger Dixon brother is his relationship with Carol (Melissa McBride), who obviously seems to fancy him. Apparently not hooking up with any woman he can makes him gay, or, you know, they could just be friends, or maybe even he was giving her time to come to terms with the fact that she lost both her husband (even though he was an abusive asshole) and her daughter.

However that all works out, they’ve been apart for some time, ever since Rick (Andrew Lincoln) banished her from the prison (which I’m not entirely sure he told Daryl about). But that’s going to change, as illustrated by this picture of Daryl and Carol together. Whatever the nature of their relationship, be it romantic or platonic, it has to be nice for them to be back together.

The Walking DeadThere are actually a bunch of pics of Carol here, including one with baby Judith Grimes…

The Walking Dead…and another of her gazing out a shattered window. An ominous sight indeed.

The Walking DeadWhile most of the group of survivors are currently imprisoned in Terminus, she’s out wandering in the wilderness with Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman), which is a bit weird, because they hook up in the comics, so I keep expecting that to happen at some point.

The Walking DeadSeason 5 will also reunite Tyreese with his sister Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green).

The Walking DeadBeing a fan favorite, Daryl shows up in these photos again, sneaking around doing something…

The Walking Dead…and hanging out with Rick, both armed…

The Walking Dead…and just watching.

The Walking DeadSpeaking of Rick, he looks suitably grim and grizzled for what we hope he is becoming in the series. We like the trajectory his character travelled over the last half of season 4, and we certainly hope it continues.

The Walking Dead
The Walking DeadGlen (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), are still around, at least when they can pry themselves away from whatever dark, isolated corner they’ve found where they can hump their brains out.

The Walking DeadSomehow Maggie always looks relatively clean and put together, almost glamorous, despite the fact that it’s the end of the world and bathing/grooming supplies and facilities are in short supply. I guess it is TV after all.

The Walking DeadAnd this image of Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) hiding behind one car while another burns, is a sure fire sign that the group is going to find themselves in all manner of sticky situations this time out, which is just find by us.

Though there aren’t any pictures of Michonne (Danai Gurira) this time out, there are damn sure a bunch of shots of walkers for those of you who are into the gore. One thing The Walking Dead has always done well, despite the numerous and varied problems it’s had over the years, is dealing with the continually decay of the zombies. Over the seasons they get more and more desiccated as time, nature, and the elements take their toll on the undead bodies. And it looks like special effect guru Greg Nicotero and company will continue that into season 5.
