If The Doctor has had an archenemy over the many decades of Doctor Who‘s run, it would have to be the Daleks. Or maybe the Master. Okay, probably the Master, but people who don’t watch Doctor Who could still probably recognize a Dalek, even if they couldn’t name it. The same can’t be said for the Master, so he gets second billing. What was I talking about? Right. Daleks.

While the malevolent Daleks have been bedeviling everyone’s favorite Time Lord for nearly 50 years, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat felt that the galaxy’s deadliest salt-and-pepper shakers had become a bit overexposed. Last May Moffat told The Guardian that he was putting the Daleks in time-out for a while. “They have been defeated by the Doctor about 400 times,” said Moffat. “Surely they should just see the TARDIS approaching, say, ‘Oh. It’s him again’, and trudge away.”

Apparently Moffat has now decided the Daleks have been out of the spotlight long enough, because the official Doctor Who website has released a series of teaser images (you can see them in the gallery below) that suggest the Daleks will be returning in force. Not only that, but Doctor Who TV reports the rumor that there may be a conflict amongst the Daleks, as a way to explain the different variations on the Dalek design over the years. As the official website puts it:

Here are some sneaky pictures fresh from the set of Doctor Who where the Daleks are being wheeled before the cameras once again. But which design? The answer is ALL OF THEM!

It sounds like the Doctor will have his work cut out for him when the show returns for series 7. Sadly, however, the Daleks are only the second greatest threat to Doctor Who; the most dangerous is director David Yates
