transcendenceAfter a longtime collaboration as Christopher Nolan’s go-to cinematographer, Wally Pfister has moved on to pursue a career in feature film directing with Transcendence, a strange, high-minded science fiction film that would be right at home in Nolan’s own filmography. As casting news has revealed who will be featured in the new science fiction film, Transcendence is shaping up to be something special. Now we’ve finally got some more clues about exactly what the movie is about in the first place.

ScreenCrush, recently got their hands on the official Transcendence plot synopsis, and it confirms that Johnny Depp’s character of Dr. Will Caster will have his consciousness uploaded into a super computer, but it doesn’t explain to what end. We can only imagine what Pfister has in store for audiences with the idea of Johnny Depp’s brain uploaded to the Internet. Read the official synopsis below:

Will Caster, forefather of A.I., has his consciousness uploaded onto the internet.

Once there, is it really Will who is interacting with humanity in order to make things better, or a darker sinister clone bent on the termination of the world as we know it?

Johnny Depp was the first to join the cast of Transcendence back in December 2012. Depp was later joined by a few of Christopher Nolan’s regulars, including Rebecca Hall (The Prestige), Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight trilogy), and Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Inception). The cast also includes Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Cole Hauser, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Cory Hardrict.

The film is already in production, a co-production between the American film company Alcon Entertainment and the Chinese film company DMG Entertainment for distribution in China. DMG Entertainment has already released a brief featurette that highlights some of the film’s model work and the lovely Rebecca Hall. Although the featurette is mostly in Chinese, you can still get a sense of the hard work and a few details of Transcendence. A one-sheet for the film and an image of the film’s production was also released for the Chinese market.

It’s going to be interesting to see Pfister in action as director instead of a cinematographer. He has a keen eye and is a master at blending CGI and practical effects. He won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for such work in 2010’s Inception. Pfister worked with Christopher Nolan on almost all of his films, from 2000’s Memento to last year’s The Dark Knight Rises. He also worked on the photography for F. Gary Gray’s The Italian Job remake in 2003 and the Academy Award-nominated film Moneyball in 2011.

Jack Paglen wrote the science fiction film’s screenplay, and Transcendence will also be his feature film debut. Christopher Nolan and his producing-partner and wife Emma Thomas will be the film’s executive producers. With all of this amazing talent involved, Transcendence just screams high quality.

Transcendence will hit theaters everywhere on April 18, 2014.
