Will The Terminator Series Get A Reboot?

Yesterday, somehow getting lost in the shuffle of Disney/LucasFilm news, a lonely tweet popped up from the official Annapurna Pictures Twitter account, teasing the future of the Terminator series and the possibility of a reboot film.

Annapurna Pictures tweeted with the following: “‘The whole thing goes: The future’s not set. There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves.’ – John Connor, Terminator 2 (news is coming).” Can we assume the announcement of either Terminator 5 or a new Terminator reboot could be the news in question? Hollywood producer Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures bought the rights to the Terminator series in May 2011. If nothing is done with the property by 2018, the rights to the series revert back to James Cameron.

The Terminator series has had its share of highs and lows since the release of the first film back in 1984. Since then, a successful sequel film followed in 1991, but a disappointing third film in 2003 started a long string of failure. Despite seeing moderate success with Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fox in 2008, the TV series was ultimately canceled the next year due to poor ratings. Later, in 2009, the PG-13 rated Terminator Salvation received a lukewarm reception from audiences and fans of the series.

Currently, the talents behind the original Terminator films have distanced themselves from the series. Arnold Schwarzenegger called Terminator Salvation “awful,” despite making a “cameo” in the film. And director James Cameron said of a potential new series, “They have been trying to put a script together but I’ve not seen it, so I’ve no idea. There’s nothing on the drawing board at this point. Nothing on the plan.”

Annapurna Pictures hasn’t announced anything official yet, but now that Schwarzenegger is getting back into acting, we might just get to hear him saying “I’ll be back” in a new Terminator movie.

We do not need a reboot! We know the story! Just make a new one!

Terminator and T2 were both excellent. Ah-nold may have thought that Terminator: Salvation was “awful”, but it was still better than T3.

If they were going to do anything, I think they should do the story of the rise of John Connor and the Resistance after Judgement Day, something in the same vein as what “Salvation” tried to do, but more gritty and with no “face of skynet” moments.

I really do miss The Sarah Connor Chronicles, it started kind of weak, but was pretty rockin’ towards the end.
