Terminator Genisys Super Bowl Trailer Is Full Of Crazy Stunts And Liquid Metal

Even for those who don’t care a whit about the vagaries of sportsball, Super Bowl Sunday is still a time to be planted in front of the TV. You get to see the ads various companies have blown their entire quarterly budget on, and you get to see new trailers for the most-anticipated movies of the coming year. Except these days you don’t even have to tune in to the big game because the trailers usually wind up online days before. Case in point, the new Super Bowl spot for Terminator Genisys, which you can check out below.
We’re still pretty skeptical about Genisys, and not just because of the terrible name. The plot, which winds in and around the events of the past sequels while also rewriting the franchise’s history, sounds ambitiously bonkers in a way that could prove an absolute trainwreck if not handled in just the right way. And as much as I love Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Jai Courtney (Spartacus: Blood and Sand), they’ve got an uphill battle to prove worthy of the badass legacy of Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. But I do have to admit: that bus stunt is gonna look pretty impressive on the big screen.
It’s also going to take some getting used to when it comes to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s aged T-800. If you’ve been following the news about the flick, you know that in Genisys‘ distorted timeline, Arnie is playing a Terminator cyborg who actually raised Sarah Connor from childhood after another Terminator killed her parents. The logic goes that, even though Terminators have metal endoskeletons, they’re covered with living tissue, and that tissues ages just like ours does — hence a silver-haired ‘bot who looks to be in his mid ’60s.
Of course, we’ll also see a much younger Arnie, in the form of the T-800 he played in James Cameron’s original Terminator film…or at least a CGI version of him. Genisys‘ de-aged Schwarzenegger definitely looks better than the one from Terminator Salvation, but we’re still pretty deep in the uncanny valley here. Still, it should be fun to see Arnie tussling with his younger self.
The Super Bowl spot also gives us a new look at the sequel’s villain, a newer model Terminator which sports the liquid metal of Robert Patrick’s T-1000, but with some new upgrades. From the look of things, it appears that this new Terminator has a solid interior structure underneath the liquid metal — it essentially looks like you skinned somebody and then painted them silver.
Terminator Genisys opens in theaters on July 1, 2015.
