T-800There has been a lot of movement on the Terminator front lately. We’ve learned taht Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures are looking to bring the franchise back to the small screen with a new TV series, and that Brie Larson and Emilia Clarke are the frontrunners for the Sarah Connor role in the new film. Now it looks like director Alan Taylor’s (Game of Thrones) may be official, and that the new film may have a title.

Production Weekly reports that Taylor will be the reboot’s new director, and that the new title is Terminator: Genesis. Production Weekly is a very reliable source, but until Paramount, Skydance, or Annapurna confirms the title, take this news with a grain of salt. We’ve been hearing that the reboot will closely tie-in with the previous films. One rumor is that the movie might take place at the same time as the 1984 original. The subtitle Genesis certainly points to the origins of the film series’ story, so I guess we should be happy that the film isn’t called Terminator Begins or Terminator Rises. We also dodged the oh-so-popular Age of… bullet as well.

Yesterday, there were reports that a new Terminator TV series will tie-in with the revamped trilogy. While it’s unclear which network will air episodes of the new show, it’s hard to imagine if general audiences can follow Terminator’s complex timeline. I mean, I’m a big fan of the movies, and I’m having a hard time imagining how all of these new additions will come together in the end. Da7e from Latino Review wrote a piece on how the timeline works. While the article is in-depth, with charts and graphs and all of that, it’s still hard to wrap your mind around everything the franchise entails.

Recently, it was reported that Brie Larson (Short Term 12) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) are the current favorites to take over the Sarah Connor role. This bit of casting also points to where the reboot will fit in the timeline. Larson and Clarke are both around the same age of Linda Hamilton in the original Terminator. There’s also a strong possibility that Boyd Holbrook (The Host), Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), or Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) could fill the John Connor role, while Taylor Kitsch (Battleship) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) are being considered for Kyle Reese. Of course, the only actor confirmed for Terminator 5 is Arnold Schwarzenegger, so this is all just speculation at this point.

Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier are tasked with writing the script. Kalogridis’ wrote Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, as well as Battle Angel for James Cameron. Lussier wrote and directed both Dracula 2000 and Drive Angry. The duo will also work on the television project, executive producing with writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor). Considering Taylor’s extensive background in TV, it’s curious to think if he’d also be involved with the new project.

Terminator: Genesis hits theaters everywhere on July 1, 2015.
