The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has been down a long, fiery road since it was first announced. Having Michael Bay on board as a producer didn’t help — many fans were unhappy with his cinematic take on the Transformers, so even though he’s not in the director’s chair, folks have been wary. Then there was the early script leak, which, among other things, revealed that the reboot was altering the Turtles’ origin…into Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles. There was backpedaling, there were release date shifts, and there was much fanboy rage ricocheting around the halls of the Internet. Well, now we finally get to see the first full trailer for ourselves.

And for our first glimpse of the Turtles in action, the action, at least, looks to be a lot of fun. We’ve got shots of Leonardo leaping off a water tower and landing in front of April O’Neil (Megan Fox), quick-cut battle scenes, and a crazy-looking sequence where Donatello and Raphael are tumbling down a snowy hill, with Raph smacking into a Hummer and sending it rolling. We also see what I’m guessing is April’s first freaked-out face-to-face introduction to one of the Turtles. Michelangelo reassures her by taking off his mask, but for some strange reason that doesn’t seem to lessen her shock. I can’t really blame her; even for a teenage mutant ninja turtle, that is one freaky-looking teenage mutant ninja turtle. I think it’s the nostrils. Anatomy demands he have some, but they just look odd.

We also get to see William Fichtner as the villain, plus a quick glimpse at the Shredder armor. Notably, his narration does indeed seem to confirm the reported change to the Turtles’ origin story. Taking a page from the recent Spider-Man movies, it turns out the Turtles were actually created by the Man Who Would Be Shredder…and April O’Neil’s father. That will certainly give her a more personal stake in things, but I’m not sure it was really necessary. She’s a reporter, for crying out loud; she doesn’t need a familial tie to be interested in a pack of freakin’ teenage mutant ninja turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Megan Fox, Danny Woodburn, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, and William Fichtner as The Shredder. It opens in theaters on August 8.
