Syfy’s 12 Monkeys Flashes Back To The Future In Yet Another Clip

At the rate we’re going, we’ll see a substantial chunk of the debut episode of Syfy’s 12 Monkeys well before the premiere this Friday. Actually, between the release of the first nine minutes, followed by another three, we’ve already laid eyes on roughly a quarter of the pilot, but that’s not enough, that’s never enough, and the network released another piece for our perusal.

This picks up right where the last one leaves off. Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), waiting at a hotel to see if she’s crazy or not, discovers that James Cole (Aaron Stanford), the man who kidnapped her and told her he’s from a future where a vicious pandemic rocked the human race, shows up, proving he’s telling the truth. He also has a bullet in his leg, which the virologist must tend to.

While Cole falls in and out of consciousness, due both to the pain of surgery without anesthesia and what looks like a massive loss of blood, he flashes back (or forward) to how he got here. This clip provides a different glimpse of the wrecked future, including letting you know that Cole was some kind of prisoner in his time, before being selected for what is essentially a risky time travel experiment. You have to wonder what wrongs in his past he’s trying to atone for by embarking on this journey? This footage also introduces the mysterious Jones (Barbara Sukowa), who is obviously a person of some influence in the future.

I admit I’ve been moderately intrigued by what we’ve seen thus far, and since this is only part three of five, I’m curious to see what they do next. I can’t, however, shake the feeling that 12 Monkeys isn’t doing much to differentiate itself from the Terry Gilliam film it’s based on. Right now, I’m chalking that up to the fact that this is only the first few moments of the very first episodes—pilots are always a bit rocky—but of all the concerns I have, this is by far the biggest. The movie is great, but what are you brining to the table to ensure that this isn’t just a tepid rehash of what came before? So far it’s getting decent reviews, which is good to hear, and we’ll have the chance to see for ourselves later this week.

If you haven’t checked them out yet, here is the first nine minutes…

…and the next three…

…or maybe you just want to wait until the whole thing airs in one easy to digest episode on Friday, January 16 at 9:00pm on Syfy.
