We've got a good feeling about this.

Directing Credits: Ex Machina (upcoming)

Garland is making his feature directorial debut with the upcoming robot flick Ex Machina, due out in 2015 (no relation to Brian K. Vaughan’s excellent comic book series). However, he’s got plenty of experience with big-screen genre material, having spent the past decade or so penning scripts for movies such as 28 Days Later…, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd, as well as having worked on the ill-fated Halo movie adaptation. As we learned with the prequels, the most important part of a good Star Wars movie isn’t the lavish special effects, but having a story and characters we actually care about. Garland has proven he know how to write from that mindset, and with Dredd — for which he had sketched out ideas for a larger franchise — he showed he knows how to write action as well. He’d be perfect for one of the standalone Star Wars films. Assuming the rumored Han Solo and Boba Fett films go well, he’d be a great pick to slot in for a sequel to either of those, or one focusing on another of the Star Wars universe’s more gritty, ground-level characters. Maybe he could finally get Dengar some respect.
