As a huge fan of ’80s films like Gleaming the Cube, Heathers, and Pump Up the Volume, it’s nice to see Christian Slater getting more work lately. He’s never really not been working, but he’s been part of higher profile projects in recent times. The mini-Jack Nicholson fronted his own TV show (Breaking In), and he popped up opposite Sylvester Stallone in Bullet to the Head. Now the 43-year-old actor is headlining the science fiction adventure Stranded, which just dropped a new trailer and poster at the European Film Market.

Watching this trailer, you can’t help but think that you’ve seen similar movies before. There are definite strains of Alien in Stranded’s DNA, among other things. The whole thing was directed by Roger Christian, of Battlefield Earth infamy, something that might give you pause. But the premise sounds ridiculous enough that is just might be a lot of fun.

Slater plays Col. Gerard Brauchman, the leader of a space mission. When a meteor collides with their space station, Brauchman and the other three astronauts on board (Amy Matysio, Brendan Fehr, and Michael Therriault) are exposed to what appears to be alien spores that replicate, reproduce, and mutate quickly. When the only female crew member becomes pregnant, she gives birth in less than 36 hours. Beyond the obvious problems with this scenario, it turns out the baby can change shape, and takes over the identity of another astronaut. Of course this presence is ill tempered and up to no good, and takes out the crew one by one.

If you think that sounds insane, you’re not alone, because it does sound very, very crazy, but that’s not always a bad thing. Stranded could be fun, it could also be terrible, but with creatures, a contained environment, and what appears to be a guy exploding in an airlock, there’s definite potential. As with many of you, we’ll also be waiting for this to fall on its face.
