Star Wars And Game Of Thrones, Together At Last

You know what makes two wonderfully geeky things even geekier? Bringing them together in a viral YouTube video. And that’s exactly this new clip does. Budding visual effects artist Joel Miller (also known as good old Joel935M) has rotoscoped lightsabers onto the duel between Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) and Jaimie Lanister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), thus synthesizing the worlds of Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

Tell me you haven’t already watched this scene a time or two and not envisioned it playing out like this. You know you have, and that’s okay. It’s that archetypal hero versus villain moment and practically cries out for the humming and whirring sound effects of a lightsaber to be thrown into the mix.

According to the notes, this is Joel935M’s first attempt at rotoscoping with this particular program, and it looks pretty seamless. Not that I’m an expert on the matter, or have any business judging his talents, but good for him. Job well done.

You can tell that this video is going to get popular for a couple reasons. One, the kids sure do seem to love those Star Wars and Game of Thrones things; and two, because response videos are already popping up. There’s this one, which is the exact same video, but with a section of John Williams’ Star Wars score laid over the top of the swashbuckling action.
