Star Wars Fans Building Full-Scale Millennium Falcon Replica

It may be crazy, but it's our kind of crazy.

Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is currently filming Noah, a retelling of the Biblical story of a man tasked by God to build a big-ass boat to survive an impending apocalyptic flood (much to the consternation of his homeowner’s association, I’m sure). It still seems an odd project for the dude who brought us Black Swan and The Fountain, but I’m intrigued to see what Aronofsky brings to the age-old tale. After all, there’s something compelling about stories where a person or people believe they are called to do something by a higher power, even though it seems on the surface to be insane. After all, that’s basically the idea behind Field of Dreams, isn’t it? Well, now we’ve got another entry to the genre: a group of Star Wars fans who have undertaken a quest to build a 1:1 scale replica of Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon. Crazy? Perhaps. But our sort of crazy.

“Founder and project leader” Chris Lee freely admits on the project’s webpage that most of his friends and family think he’s lost his mind. But while the idea is definitely out there, if Lee and his team succeed, they’ll have bragging rights any geek worth his salt would kill for. I mean, can you imagine being able to end a night out with friends with the phrase, “I’m tapped out, you guys want to go back and watch movies on the Falcon?”

Working from various sources, the Falcon builders have calculated the specs and measurements for both the exterior and interior of the ship, which will be 114 feet long and which is expected to take 5-7 years to complete. Their website is packed with pictures and entries detailing their work on various parts of the replica, from the quad-guns to the cockpit console to the iconic Djarik (holo-chess) table. We’ve got a sampling of pictures below, but you can click over to the Full Scale Millennium Falcon Project website for more, and to find out how you can support the project.
