I'd rather have it good than soon.

Now that J.J. Abrams is officially on board for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, there should only be two short years before we get the chance to watch this movie in theaters. After all, we have a screenwriter and director announced for the project. But it seems like there might be a slight hiccup with Disney’s plan to release the new Star Wars movie in 2015. J.J. Abrams has not committed to that release date yet.

According to THR, the 46-year-old director “has not committed to that release date, meaning the date could be changed if the development process requires it.” In fact, in the official press release from Disney, there is absolutely no mention of the 2015 release date at all.

This isn’t the first time Abrams has pushed back a release date for a big blockbuster movie. After the success of the Star Trek reboot in 2009, Paramount Pictures wanted the sequel film as soon as possible and pushed to release it in 2012. Abrams didn’t want to rush the production, however, and opted for a 2013 release date instead. If history repeats itself, we could possibly see a 2016 release date for Episode VII.

Meanwhile, Abrams seems very excited and enthusiastic about getting the directing job for the new Star Wars movie. On the red carpet for the Producers Guild Awards this week, Abrams answered a few questions about the plans for the upcoming science fiction film. Abrams revealed:

You know, obviously, it’s so early. I can just say what I want to do: I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we’re just getting started. I’m very excited.

J.J. Abrams was honored during the ceremony for the Producers Guild Awards. He received the Norman Lear Achievement Award for his TV works including Felicity, Alias, Lost, and Revolution. So far, J.J. Abrams is having a great 2013!
