Ever wonder why Scotty spent so much time in the engine room? I think it’s because he wore a red shirt. As any Star Trek fan knows, whenever there’s trouble, the guys in the red shirts almost always die first. Staying hidden away with the engines is a pretty good way to stay out of trouble.

Red shirts never really get their due, that’s part of being a red shirt, but that changes in just a few days with the release of John Scalzi’s new book Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas. It follows the adventures of Starfleet’s most often overlooked cannon fodder and, just to make the whole thing a little more fun, musician Jonathan Coulton has written a song as a theme for the book.
