Star Trek’s New Uniforms Are Brown

J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek sequel—as yet untitled—is in the works. Rebooting the franchise means some tweaks, changes, and updates to the beloved series. According to a new behind the scenes photo, these alterations include some snazzy new uniforms.

The photo shows Scotty and Chekov (Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin, respectively, reprising their roles from the first film) in rigid-looking brown uniforms. When you think of Starfleet uniforms you usually think of the iconic gold, blue, and red (poor redshirts) outfits from the original series. At least that’s what I think of.

It is unclear what the function and purpose of these new unis are. They look like they could be some sort of dress uniform, something worn at an official function or celebration. There’s not really much else to go on in this pic. The outfits bear the Starfleet logo, but no sign of rank or medals or anything of that nature. However, they definitely look like they’re intended for more of a special occasion than day to day use and they actually resemble the grey dress uniform worn by Spock in the 2009 Star Trek film…

Anjini Azhar, the young actress who appears in the film and the photo with Pegg and Yelchin, shared the photo with her talent agency, who then put them up on web. The pictures have since gone viral, passed around by fans and Trek centric websites. Azhar plays the daughter of Noel Clarke and Nanzeen Contractor’s characters.

What do you think of the new look?

    Starfleet meets The Empire??

they look like russian uniforms. not to keen on the look, j.j needs to stay true to the original series and stop changing things whats next jj german wwII Nazi Uniform or Canadian Mounted Police.

This is most likely a from Nero majorly affecting the time space continuum. Possibly causing an alternate reality in part of the movie where Cumberbatch ( Gary Seven ) has to intervene.

Look at the shoulders! Scotty has 4 stars, Chekov only 2!

Mmmm… Brown KGB uniforms, even the insignias are brown, Not at all impressed. even Shattered Universe uniforms looked better. What is J.J. Abrams thinking???

If they aren’t just tailors precuts so they can get the style and fitting right before moving on to colors and rank insignia then they’re a martial uniform, neutral brown for a nod at camo and no ranks or colors so the enemy can’t go “that’s the one in charge, shot ‘em” and I’m guessing that the way they mimic Russian / Fascist uniforms is for pure intimidation. Face it, you see that on a view screen and your gonna think ‘well they aint afraid of getting oil, mud and blood on those uniforms and they don’t need constantly reminding of their chain of command, which suggests they’re tight knit and disciplined. Maybe we need to be very diplomatic when dealing with this lot.’ A more martial & guarded Star Fleet is a natural progression after the first film where they saw nearly a third of their fleet and the Vulcan home world destroyed .

These uniforms also suggest a nasty plot device, imagine a situation where a number of major and minor characters are deploying to a dangerous situation and none of them are wearing red. In fact I’m put in mind of a Brown Coat situation from Firefly where your left on the edge of your seat thinking ‘they’re not just gonna kill almost all of them, are they?’ JJA’s already done the red shirt in joke in the first one, maybe he’s going for an even geekier and more random color reference this time.

You sure they don’t have rank? Look at the epaulets–looks like Scotty has 2 stars/markings, while Chekov only has 1.

Well spotted, but it still fits, in the real world only units that expect to to meet heavy sniper resistance completely remove all insignia, but almost all operate with toned down insignia in extended combat situations. I find the comment above really interesting though. Are we seeing the birth of a Terran Empire and the mirror universe with the extended plot arc of future films being the Enterprise somehow derailing that future and saving the Federation? Is JJA’s actual plan to make a massive comment on how humanitarian and peacekeeping can quickly become empire building and tyranny which Gene Roddenberry would be proud of and which could be incredibly relevant to the real modern world.

Hmm… I actually like the look, sort of a combined British/Soviet look, but I think it would have fit Enterprise better (closer to modern times) than a film taking place in the same era as TOS

    • bhak1

second thought… could they be Terran Empire uniforms?

I don’t give a floating fat man’s farts about this movie anymore.

Wonder if these uniforms are the ones they wear at Star Fleet HQ for special occasions? I hope the color is not as bland as it looks on the photos and the rank bars are extremely difficult to see on the shoulder tats.

CBS, why don’t you show JJ and his bad robot where the airlock exits are off the star Trek Set and get a person at the helm who actually likes Star Trek and wants to do Gene’s creation justice????
