Star Trek: TNG Entire Run Available On DVD For A Hundred Bucks

TNGIf you’re a Star Trek fan who doesn’t already have copies of every season of every series, today we’ve got one hell of a great deal for you. Groupon has the entire run of Star Trek: The Next Generation available on DVD for a mere $101.99. That should already sound promising if you pay any attention to home-video prices, but to put that in a little more perspective, this set would normally run around $425. So you’re getting the set for 76% off, a savings of a whopping $323. (And around $80 cheaper than you can get it on Amazon.) Like a certain captain might say, “Make it so.”

Now, there are a couple of negative strikes against this deal. For one, it’s on DVD, rather than Blu-ray. If all you care about is getting the episodes themselves, this should still do the trick. However, if you have to have your shows in the best quality available, this isn’t going to match the Blu-ray editions that have been releasing from Paramount for the last couple of years.

Moreover, those Blu-ray editions have been specifically remastered and had some of the original visual effects upgraded, just like the high-def treatment given to the Original Series before it. (There have been some problems along the way, however.) So again, if you want your copy of The Next Generation to be in the very best quality available, this might not be the deal for you. Then again, buying all the Blu-ray TNG sets is gonna cost you considerably more than you’ll spend on this DVD set.

One final note is that this isn’t a collection of the individual Next Gen DVD sets that were released over the years, but rather the stripped-down 20th anniversary edition, which only includes one DVD of bonus features. Like we said, if you just want the episodes for your collection and aren’t the sort to spend hours poring over the making of the show, this should suit you just fine, but do make sure you realize what it is you’re getting. Like anyone who’s ever dealt with the Ferengi knows, let the buyer beware…

Here’s the official description from Groupon:

“Space: the final frontier.” So Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) intoned at the start of each episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation as the starship Enterprise soared through the Alpha Quadrant. The 178-episode show, which ran from 1987 to 1994, is often named one of the best TV series of all time, thanks to its progressively diverse casting and exploration of complex themes such as slavery, assisted suicide, and environmentalism. With this 20th-anniversary edition boxed set, viewers can relive the epic space journey from the beginning, across 48 DVDs and one disc of bonus features, which can be cut up and soldered into a replica of Geordi La Forge’s visor.
