Star Trek Into The Darkness Writer Says The Movie Will Melt Your Face Off

When a movie is operating under the level of secrecy that J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel is, fans will devour any little tidbit that happens to leak out. We’ve seen leaked set photos. We’ve speculated endlessly about the identity of the villain being played by Benedict Cumberbatch. And just last week Abrams went on Conan and premiered the first footage we’ve seen from the awkwardly named Star Trek Into the Darkness in the form of a very, very brief clip. Like one-second-long brief. Unsurprisingly, this brief teaser irritated some fans, and now Trek writer Roberto Orci has sounded off, telling fans to chill out and boasting that the sequel will “melt your face right off.”
Orci made the claim as part of an ongoing back-and-forth with Trek fans on a TrekMovie comments thread. In addition to sparring with Trekkers both curious and irate, Orci directly addressed the claims that the three-frame teaser video felt like Abrams and company were deliberately antagonizing the fans. You can find numberous posts by Orci over at TrekMovie, but the relevant section is below:
Classic. you essentially are saying, “You’ve given us nothing! Except for that one thing you gave us — the title – and I hate it!”
I guess you will have to show me the marketing handbook you are using to question our schedule. Appreciate that you wanna see things ASAP. Delayed gratification is not a strong characteristic of some folks. I get it. All I can say is:
relax. the movie is gonna melt your face right off. Your eyeballs are going to bleed. And you’ll thank us;)
Orci talks a big game, but can he back it up? While Abrams’ Trek movie was visually spectacular, even the film’s supporters have to admit that it was plagued by, amongst other things, some godawful slapstick humor that shouldn’t have made it past the first draft (Look, Kirk has giant hands! Hilarious!) With Star Trek Into the Darkness Abrams has a chance to prove that this new iteration of Trek can be more than just a cash-in that abandons many of the things that made the original series so special and effective. It could fix the problems of the first one and in the process win over fence-sitters who have a love-hate relationship with Abrams’ first film. Or…it could embrace all the worst qualities of the previous film and alienate die-hard Trek fans even more.
At this point your guess is as good as mine, but I do now one thing: I’m going to find a convention the week the movie opens and set up a booth to sell J.J. Abrams voodoo dolls, just in case.
