Appearances: “The Springfield Files” (1997)

As mentioned earlier, Agents Mulder and Scully turn up in the alien-themed “Springfield Files” episode. After Homer spots a potential EBE (that’s extraterrestrial biological entity, natch) in the woods around Springfield, the FBI’s spookiest paranormal investigators (no, not them) investigators arrive on the scene to figure out what’s what. They grill Homer and run him through assorted tests before dismissing him as a loon. Even Mulder! The so-called “alien” is eventually revealed to be a confused Mr. Burns, dazed after a series of treatments that keep him alive, and glowing slightly from all those years of nuclear power plant exposure. Scully deems the events the worst X-Files investigation ever. Which is ridiculous, because that honor goes to the X-Files episode “First Person Shooter.”

Mulder: Look at this, Scully: there has been another unsubstantiated UFO sighting in the heartland of America. We’ve got to get there right away.

Scully: Well, gee Mulder, there’s also this report of a shipment of drugs and illegal weapons coming into New Jersey tonight.

Mulder: I hardly think the FBI is concerned with matters like that.
