Appearances: “Deep Space Homer” (1994), “The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular” (1995)

Marking the first major player from the science side of things, Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin appeared as himself in the episode “Deep Space Homer.” If you recall, this was the one where NASA attempts to combat diminishing public interest in their programs by sending an average Joe along on a space mission. Or rather, an average Homer (and Barney, for that matter). Obviously they need some more experienced crew members, so Buzz Aldrin comes along for the ride as well, along with fictional astronaut “Race Banyon” (voiced by Hank Azaria). Unsurprisingly, the mission soon goes horribly wrong, but Homer manages to save the day in the end. After putting the day in peril in the first place, I mean. “Deep Space Homer” also gave us one of the show’s best lines: Kent Brockman’s “I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.”

Buzz Aldrin: So Barney, we hear you’re kickin’ ass.

Homer: I, uh, don’t think this contest is over yet Buzz. If that is your real name. I believe there is still a little something called the swimsuit competition.

Buzz Aldrin: There’s no swimsuit competition, Homer.

Homer: You mean I shaved my bikini zone for nothing?
