The World’s End Animated Storyboards Offer Insight Into Edgar Wright’s Process

The World’s End, the third and final film in Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy hit the home video market last week. The film was one of this past summer’s sleeper hits, and marched to cult classic status almost before it was released. It also marked the end of an era for Wright and Pegg, and now that the pair is venturing off to work on other projects. One of the bonus features on the new Blu-ray is an animated storyboard. Total Film released this video that compares the opening sequence to the original storyboards.
The opening of The World’s End is fantastic. The more and more you watch the film, the more you understand that every element in the film is showcased in the first five minutes. Wright and Pegg are great at foreshadowing. The duo did the same thing in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and on the TV series Spaced. One of the reasons why their films are so clever and smart is that they include every precise detail in their scripts and storyboards.
The World’s End saw moderate success at the box office, taking in $46 million worldwide against a $20 million production budget. By no means a box office failure, the results are disappointing compared to the other films in the trilogy. The World’s End is the type of movie that will gain a bigger audience on home video, video on demand, and online video streaming.
Focus Features will also release the complete Three Flavours trilogy in one handy Blu-ray set. While the bonus features are sparse when it comes to this collection, the home video release will feature interactive screenplays for all three films in the trilogy. A few months ago, Wright released the interactive and annotated scripts for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so it’s going to be great for fans to get more details about The World’s End.
At the moment, Wright’s next film will be the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Three with his Ant-Man adaptation, scheduled to hit theaters everywhere on July 31, 2015. Ant-Man has been in the works for a long time, considering that Marvel first announced Wright’s involvement in 2006. As for Pegg, he will work on the upcoming Mission: Impossible 5 for director Christopher McQuarrie and producer/star Tom Cruise, which opens on December 25, 2015. It’s going to be interesting to see if Wright, Pegg, and co-conspirator Nick Frost will re-team for another movie in the future. Something tells me they will somewhere down the line.
In the US The World’s End hit Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on November 19, while the trilogy Blu-ray will be released on December 3. In the UK, these releases will both be available on November 25.
