Scotty Says The Next Star Trek Villain Definitely Isn’t Khan

Almost every Hollywood insider seems to agree that the villain of the next Star Trek movie is Khan Noonian Singh. Yes, that Khan. On the flipside of that, the movie’s director JJ Abrams’ insists that it isn’t Khan. No one believes him because, to put it bluntly, JJ Abrams lies. He lies a lot.

You can’t trust anything Abrams has to say about his projects, ever, and the rumor that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan in the next Star Trek has been confirmed and triple confirmed by so many scoop sources that it seems like fact.

But maybe it’s not.

You can’t trust JJ Abrams at all but normally you can trust Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the new Trek series. Pegg is normally a pretty honest and up front guy so maybe we should believe him when he tells The Telegraph

It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.

Simon Pegg would know what’s up, having already filmed the movie, and has absolutely no reason to lie here. Actually, he has every reason to tell the truth. Unlike Abrams, Pegg depends heavily on the support and goodwill of his fans to get the projects he wants to make done. He’d never intentionally do anything to piss them off. If Pegg says Khan isn’t the villain of Trek, then I guess we need to all nod our heads and agree that it definitely isn’t.

Feel free to breathe a sigh of relief. This Khan as the bad guy thing was a pretty horrible idea anyway. Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor, but casting the whitest man on the planet to play an iconic character of Indian descent seemed like race-bending of the highest order. None of it ever made any sense.

So why have all the rumors persisted? There’s a chance this could be intentional. Abrams is notoriously secretive and sometimes flat out dishonest when it comes to talking about his in-development projects. It’s entirely possible that the whole thing could be some sort of disinformation campaign originating with Abrams’ himself. Maybe Khan isn’t the villain of Star Trek: The Next, but by making us think it is JJ has kept the real identity of Cumberbatch’s character a complete and total surprise for Star Trek fans.

So if he’s not Khan then who is Cumberbatch playing? I’m guessing the god-powered Gary Mitchell. Post your theories in the comments section below. Here’s a look at Cumberbatch filming the next Trek as a visual aid for your guessing game…

Or maybe they will have Kahn, just not as a villain.

      A diabolical theory.

        Indeed.

I’ve been calling for the Gary Mitchell story ever since the last movie ended and everyone started plotted about what the next one should be about. Definitely hoping thats what it is. Oh and… I think “:The next” just sounds stupid. anyone else agree?

It’s not the title. It doesn’t have a title yet, that’s just what I’m calling it (jokingly) until they come up with something to call it.

Technically it’s Star Trek 12 but calling it that just confuses everyone. And Star Trek 2 is not only inaccurate, there’s already been a movie called that. Star Trek: The Next is the most accurate option until they title it officially.

The comics series from IDW (which Orci is a consultant of some kind with) supposedly will dovetail into the next movie, according to Orci, and they’ve already done the New Timeline version of “WNMHGB.” So that kind of rules out Cumberbatch and Alice Eve being Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner. My guess is he’s someone mentioned but never seen in TOS, like the name “Ferris” that Kirk dropped in “What Are Little Girls Made Of,” another dictator bent on improving the human race.

It’s Mudd. You know it, you just don’t want to admit it to yourself. Harvey Fenton Mudd.

    • JT

Point of order! Harcourt Fenton Mudd.

Personally I’d rather see Cyrano Jones.

I originally thought cumberbatch was playing Gary Mitchell.

  • GregM

How about it being Spock’s half-brother – only a more human version instead of that stodgy Sybok character in the The Final Frontier.

    King of the tribbles!

    Colonel Green!!!

We can trust Simon Pegg… UNLESS his contract states that he must do as he is told or else JJ Abrams gets to eat his first born child! In all seriousness, the whole thing has seemed weird all along. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy is somehow related to Khan, perhaps another engineered super man? Then again I think back to Batman Begins when we all had been told that Ken Watanabe was playing Ra’s Al Ghul and it actually ended up being Neeson. We’ll just have to wait and see. If the previous film is any indicator is should be enjoyable regardless of who the villain is (though I would like to see an Indian/Pakistani actor playing Khan someday)

From the official Star Trek trailer, Cumberbatch is really playing Kahn. I can’t believe they are rehashing Kahn, can’t they write new material.
