Sci-Fi Mega-Producer Gale Anne Hurd Celebrates A Birthday: Today In Science & Science Fiction

Gale Anne Hurd (October 25, 1955)
Even if you don’t pay much attention to the people who actually make your favorite movies and TV shows, you’ve almost certainly heard the name Gale Anne Hurd. Beginning with The Terminator in 1984, Hurd has served as producer on some of the biggest science fiction projects of the past 30 years, including Aliens, The Abyss, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. All those James Cameron movies are no coincidence — she was married to the self-proclaimed king of the world from 1985 – 1989. Aside from that amazing run of Cameron flicks, she also produced other genre outings such as Alien Nation, Tremors, and Armageddon. Today she’s overseeing AMC’s The Walking Dead and has a new science fiction series, Horizon, in the works at USA. Happy birthday, Gale!
Nika Futterman (October 25, 1969)
You might not know her by name, but you’ve almost certainly run across the work of Nika Futterman at some point in your life. The talented voice actress has been lending her pipes to animated characters for nearly two decades now, recently in shows such as Batman: The Brave and Bold (Catwoman/Selina Kyle), The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (Sif/Hela), and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Asajj Ventress). She’s also done voice work on a ton of video games including Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Last of Us.
“Our Mrs. Reynolds” (October 25, 2002)
With only one season and a movie, we may not have gotten to see as much of Captain Malcolm Reynolds as we would have liked, but thankfully we did get to see him all gussied up like a school marm while delivering the line, “If your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.” That fan-favorite moment happened in the Firefly episode “Our Mrs. Reynolds,” which aired on this day in 2002. Among other things, the episode featured actress Christina Hendricks as Mal’s unexpected wife (he was confused about it too). She, of course, went on to play Joan in AMC’s acclaimed Mad Men.
