Go Behind The Scenes Of The Abyss Courtesy Of YouTube
I’ve been known, on occasion, to trumpet my unabashed, abiding love for James Cameron’s The Abyss. It’s my favorite Cameron movie, and one of my favorite SF films, even one of my favorite movies, period, of all time. Maybe it just hit me at the right age, when I was still young enough to be floored with a sense of wonder at the whole notion of strange creatures living in a city on the bottom of the ocean. Maybe it’s because I was developing a fascination with the oceans and aquatic life that’s still with me today (I was a marine biology major until math beat me senseless in a dark alley and left me to die). Maybe it’s the unhinged performance by my childhood’s action hero of choice, Michael Biehn, at his very Biehn-iest. Whatever the reasons, the fact that The Abyss still hasn’t received a Blu-ray release is something I mutter about on a regular basis.
Sadly, I’m not about to break the news of an Abyss Blu-ray release date. But I do have something cool to help salve the bitter wounds of my fellow Abyss fans. The entire hour-long “Making of The Abyss” documentary which was included on some of the earlier DVD releases has found its way to YouTube, and you can watch the whole damn thing via the embeds below. The Abyss was notoriously one of the most difficult movie shoots of all time, and this look at the making of the film still fascinates me two decades after the movie’s original release. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go dig up my Abyss DVDs…
