RockOne of the best ways to give a middling film franchise a kick in the pants is to add Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to its cast. It worked for the Fast and The Furious and G.I. Joe franchises. Dwayne Johnson has a certain on-screen charisma and presence about him that translates into big box office receipts. Now it appears Johnson might join the cast of Terminator 5.

According to The Examiner, producer Megan Ellison wants to make the forthcoming Terminator 5 the largest Terminator film ever made. She’s looking to team up Dwayne Johnson with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has already been confirmed for the upcoming Terminator sequel. In fact, Annapurna Films, Ellison’s production company, is writing a version of the film’s script tailor-made for Johnson.

The Examiner’s insider sources also passed along some plot details for Terminator 5, which looks to give the series an interesting (albeit dumb) twist. Terminator 5 might be a prequel film set in the 1940s or ’50s and follow the parents of Sarah Connor. Her parents would be targeted for termination before her birth, almost in a role reversal from the original Terminator film.

Dwayne Johnson would play the Terminator cyborg sent to the past to kill the Connors, while Arnold Schwarzenegger would play their human protector, somewhat playing the Kyle Reese role. The rumored plot details further explain that the Machines were so impressed with the Connors’ protector that they modeled the future Terminators on his likeness.

Dwayne Johnson has his options open for any film series of his choosing. Over the past year, Johnson has appeared in four films this year (Snitch, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain & Gain, and Furious 6) and has a fifth (Empire State) still set for release.
